Sixth Sense
ESP goes racing!
We are
delighted to be sponsoring our own race team for the second year in a
row in 2009. Run by JDR Racing and entered in the Britcar Production
series, the Lotus Motorsport Elise finished 2nd last season. We're
hoping it can go one better this year!
The last
race was at the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, as seen
in the F1 calendar. Read on for more information on the race and how
to get involved!

Race 6: Spa-Francorchamps
 |
This famous
circuit is set in the picturesque mountainous region of Belgium and is
considering one of the world's most challenging race tracks due to its
fast and twisty nature. Despite weather reports back home, we were greeted
by the sun and 25 degree heat.
During testing,
the Lotus ran smoothly and our laptimes were up there with rival cars
despite it being our first visit to the circuit. We knew Spa's long
straights would not favour us, but the car's ability in the corners seemed
to level the playing field.

When it came to
the race (held at night), Spa suddenly showed its reputation. The heavens
opened just before the race, within minutes circumstances had changed.
Despite this, we made a great start, making up a few places past Porsches
and Ferraris within the first couple of laps. Unfortunately for one
Ferrari driver, the weather was too great a challenge and his car speared
into the barriers.
The resulting
carnage meant a safety car was released, bunching up the field for the
next 20 minutes whilst the accident was cleared. With no ventilation, not
to mention air-conditioning, the muggy weather meant the Lotus steamed up
at slow speeds which resulted in nearly zero visibility!

 |
Suddenly,
disaster struck after the safety car returned to the pits with the
throttle jamming wide open! After going off the track, the car was nursed
back into the pits for some mechanical work and a driver change. Our luck
turned with the offending problem fixed, suddenly we were the fastest car
in our class and moving back up the order!
As the race
entered its last phase with the final driver change, unfortunately other
problems reared their head. The car wasn't running smoothly and despite
coming into the pits many times for fixes, it ended up running on just
three cylinders. The Lotus apologetically limped home for the last few
laps.
|
Despite
finishing a lowly 31st, it was still a great experience visiting a world
famous race track. We'll be back!
